With less than 100 days until the world cup begins Nike has decided to unveil its uniforms for the games. Nike has decided to go in a very different direction this year when it comes to making the outfits; they have decided to make the uniforms entirely out of plastic bottles that have been discarded. These bottles have been gathered from landfills located in Taiwan and Japan, they were then melted down so that yarn could be formed and from this fabric has been spun.
This is going to be a first in history for all of the national teams that are working with Nike to be wearing uniforms that are made entirely from polyester that has been recycled. Nike is calling these new designs the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly uniforms in soccer history.
By doing this Nike has redirected over 12 million bottles away from landfills. It is estimated that each shirt will contain eight bottles, which is a move that has reduced the consumption of energy by 30 percent as compared with using virgin polyester.
